Burgas Free University (BFU) was established in 1991, and is one of the first non-state universities in the country.

BFU is a modern and innovative university, caring for its students and their professional realization, and which has significant academic achievements and an internationally recognized status:

• BFU is a member of the European Universities Association (EUA);

• It has signed Agreements of Cooperation with 36 universities and organizations in Europe, America, Asia and Africa;

• It implements students and staff exchange programmes with 24 universities in Europe;

• It participates in the ECTS;

• It works under joint international projects with more than 100 universities and organizations;

• BFU is a partner of UNESCO under the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Prpgramme, and is a host institution of UNESCO Chair on Culture of Peace and Human Rights.

BFU has the most modern and newest facilities in the system of higher education in Bulgaria. Its building was constructed in 2004 and has a total area of 22,500 square meters. The building of BFU was awarded the “Building of the Year” Prize for 2004 in a competition organized by the Ministry of Regional Development of Bulgaria, in the area of architecture and civil engineering, and its architect was elected “The Architect of the Year”.

Burgas Free University provides education and training in the following academic areas:

• Legal, Social and Economic Sciences;

• Humanities;

• Technical and Computer Sciences.


The University of Veliko Tarnovo provides Bulgarian language studies and specialized training to foreign citizens who would like to study at Bulgarian universities (full time and the duration is 1 year).

The tuition fee for the Bulgarian language course: €2400 (€1200 per semester).

Burgas is a coastal city in southeast Bulgaria, usually at the top of lists of the country’s most liveable places.


The climate in Burgas and the region is characterized as wet subtropical with sea and continental influence. The average temperature during summer is 22,7°C in July and the maximum daily temperatures are over 20°C even till November. During the winter seasons, the continental influence is evident. Temperatures remain quite soft compared to other parts of the country and there is almost no snow.


Burgas has an international airport, a maritime station, a train station, and two coach stations. A highway links the city to the capital – Sofia. There are good road connections between Burgas and all other Bulgarian coastal cities. European Route No. 8, which is the shortest land link between the Adriatic and Black Sea Coasts, passes through Burgas.
